Significance
Akshaya Tritiya falls on the third lunar day of the bright fortnight of Vaishakha. "Akshaya" means that which never diminishes -- this day carries eternal, inexhaustible merit. It is one of the most auspicious days in the Hindu calendar, requiring no additional muhurta for starting new ventures, marriages, or investments. Lord Vishnu's sixth avatar Parashurama was born on this day; the Treta Yuga began on this day; and the sage Vedavyasa began composing the Mahabharata on this day.
Preparation
Rituals & Vidhi
Morning Snan and Sankalpa
Bathe early and make a Sankalpa (resolution) for a new endeavor -- financial, spiritual, or personal. Whatever is started today bears inexhaustible fruit.
Vishnu-Lakshmi Puja
Perform puja to Vishnu and Lakshmi with yellow flowers, Tulsi, and panchamrit. Offer coins and new account books if starting a new venture.
Mantra: Om Shreem Mahalakshmyai Namah
Daan (Charity)
Give in charity -- food, water, umbrellas, footwear, or gold -- to Brahmins or the needy. Daan on Akshaya Tritiya multiplies many times in spiritual merit.
Gold Purchase
Purchase gold, silver, or any precious item. Even a small piece carries the day's auspicious energy. Worship it with flowers before bringing it home.
Family Guidance
Take children to a puja supply shop to buy a small silver item. Teach them that "akshaya" means abundance that is never depleted -- and that knowledge and good deeds are the true akshaya wealth.
