Significance

Bhai Dooj (also called Yam Dwitiya or Bhai Tika) falls on the second day of Kartika Shukla Paksha, two days after Diwali. It celebrates the bond of brother and sister -- the sister performs aarti of her brother and applies tilak on his forehead, praying for his long life and protection. Mythologically, on this day Yama (the god of death) visited his sister Yamuna (the sacred river), who performed his aarti and fed him. Yama granted a boon that whoever is celebrated by their sister on this day will be freed from the fear of death.

Preparation

Rituals & Vidhi

Tilak Ceremony

The sister prepares the puja thali. She applies kumkum tilak to the brother's forehead, applies kajal to ward off evil eyes, and scatters rice grains for longevity.

Mantra: Ganga Puja Yama Puja Yamuna Puja Karo. Apne Bhai Ki Ayu Ke Liye Pujanam Karo.

Aarti

The sister waves the diya in clockwise circles before the brother's face, performing the aarti. The brother holds both palms open to receive the blessing.

Sweet Feeding

The sister feeds sweets to the brother with her own hands. The brother then gives a gift -- traditionally clothes, jewelry, or money -- as a token of his love and protection.

Joint Meal

The siblings share a meal together. Traditionally the brother eats at the sister's home on this day.

Family Guidance

This is a beautiful ritual for children to perform between siblings. Even young children can hold the puja thali and apply tilak with guidance. If siblings are separated, a video call can be arranged for the ceremony.
