Significance

Ganesh Chaturthi marks the birthday of Lord Ganesha -- the elephant-headed son of Shiva and Parvati, and the remover of obstacles (Vighnaharta) and bestower of wisdom, intellect, and new beginnings. On this day, Ganesha descends to bless his devotees for ten days. The festival involves bringing a clay Ganesha idol home, worshipping it with love, and then immersing it in water (Visarjan) on the tenth or earlier day. The great freedom fighter Lokmanya Bal Gangadhar Tilak popularized it as a community festival in 1893 to unite India.

Preparation

Rituals & Vidhi

Prana Pratishtha

Invite Lord Ganesha's living presence (Prana Pratishtha) into the idol with this prayer. Place the idol facing east on a raised platform covered in red cloth.

Mantra: Om Gam Ganapataye Namah

Shodashopachara Puja

Offer the sixteen traditional services: invocation, seat, water for feet, water for hands, bathing, cloth, sacred thread, sandalwood, flowers, incense, lamp, food, betel nut, and farewell prayer.

Durva Offering

Offer 21 blades of Durva grass in three sets of seven. Durva is sacred to Ganesha and represents the conquest of the three states -- waking, dreaming, and deep sleep.

Mantra: Om Shri Ganeshaya Durva Yugma Samarpayami

Modak Offering

Offer fresh modak (sweet rice-coconut dumplings) to Ganesha. 21 modaks are traditional. Distribute them as prasad.

Visarjan

On the chosen day (1.5, 3, 5, 7, or 10 days), carry the idol in procession to a water body with singing and celebration, and immerse it, praying for His return next year.

Family Guidance

Make modaks with children -- teach them it is Ganesha's favorite food. Recite the Ganesh Atharvashirsha together each evening. Use eco-friendly clay idols to teach environmental responsibility alongside faith.
