Significance
Hanuman Jayanti celebrates the birth of Lord Hanuman -- the perfect devotee (Bhakta), the embodiment of selfless service (Seva), physical strength, celibacy (Brahmacharya), and surrender to Lord Rama. Born of Anjana and the Wind God Vayu on the Purnima of Chaitra, Hanuman is considered immortal (Chiranjeevi) and is said to be present wherever the name of Rama is chanted. Worshipping Hanuman dispels fear, grants courage, protects from evil forces, and fulfills devotees with shakti and bhakti.
Preparation
Rituals & Vidhi
Sunrise Puja
Wake before sunrise, bathe, and visit the Hanuman temple. At home, set up the altar with a clean red or saffron cloth.
Sindoor Offering
Offer sindoor (vermilion) to Lord Hanuman. The story behind this is Sita's application of sindoor to her forehead for Ram's long life -- Hanuman, to show devotion to Ram, covered his entire body in sindoor.
Mantra: Om Shri Hanumate Namah
Hanuman Chalisa Recitation
Recite the Hanuman Chalisa 5, 7, or 11 times. This 40-verse prayer composed by Tulsidas encapsulates all of Hanuman's qualities and grants fearlessness to the devotee.
Sundarkand Path
Read or listen to the Sundarkand chapter of the Ramcharitmanas -- the chapter narrating Hanuman's journey to Lanka. This is especially auspicious on Hanuman Jayanti.
Laddoo Prasad
Offer besan or motichoor laddoos to Hanuman and distribute to all. Visit the temple to offer the Chola (saffron robe) if possible.
Family Guidance
Teach children the Hanuman Chalisa, even just a few lines. Tell them the story of Hanuman carrying the Sanjeevani mountain. Discuss the value of loyalty, courage, and humility that Hanuman exemplifies.
