Significance
Maghi Purnima is the full moon of the Magha month (January-February), regarded as one of the most spiritually powerful days in the Hindu calendar. Bathing in sacred rivers -- especially the Ganges at Prayagraj during the Kumbh or Magh Mela -- on this day is believed to dissolve the accumulated sins of countless lifetimes. Lord Vishnu is said to be present in all sacred waters on this day. It is also the culmination of the month-long Magha Snan Vrata.
Preparation
Rituals & Vidhi
Pre-dawn Sacred Bath
Wake before sunrise (Brahma Muhurta) and take a bath. If possible, bathe in a river. Add sesame seeds and Gangajal to the bath water.
Mantra: Gange Cha Yamune Chaiva Godavari Saraswati. Narmade Sindhu Kaveri Jalesmin Sannidhim Kuru.
Til Daan
Donate sesame seeds and jaggery, warm clothes, and blankets to the underprivileged or Brahmins. Daan (charity) on this day carries enormous spiritual merit.
Vishnu Puja
Perform puja to Lord Vishnu or Satyanarayan. Offer Tulsi, white flowers, and panchamrit. Recite the Vishnu Sahasranama or Satyanarayan Katha.
Moon Offering
In the evening, offer water (Arghya) to the full moon with a copper vessel, adding white flowers and rice. Meditate on the moon as a reflection of divine consciousness.
Fasting
Many devotees observe a one-day fast, consuming only fruits and milk. Breaking the fast after the moon rises in the evening with a simple sattvic meal is traditional.
Family Guidance
Organize a family visit to a nearby river for the sacred bath. Teach children about the significance of Daan by involving them in preparing donation packages of warm clothes and sweets for the needy.
