Significance

Matri Navami (also known as Avidhava Navami) falls on Ashwin Krishna Navami. It is the most sacred day of Pitru Paksha dedicated exclusively to mothers, grandmothers, and all departed female ancestors of the lineage. Performing shraddha on this day is believed to fulfill all maternal wishes, bestow peace on female ancestors, and shower the home with prosperity, peace, and loving harmony.

Preparation

Rituals & Vidhi

Maternal Sankalpa

Bathe in the morning, remember your mother and maternal grandmothers with gratitude, and take the Matri Navami Sankalpa.

Mantra: Om Matru Devatabhyo Namah. Matru Devo Bhava.

Matri Tarpan

Offer water mixed with milk, black sesame, and white flowers through the Pitru Tirtha between thumb and forefinger.

Kanya & Brahmini Bhojan

Invite a devout married woman or girl child (Kanya) into the home, feed them freshly prepared kheer and sattvic dishes, and seek their blessings.

Suhag & Cloth Donation

Donate clothes, bangles, and grains to needy women in honor of your mother's memory.

Fasting

Fast or consume only milk and fruits until the Brahmin/married woman is fed in the afternoon.

Family Guidance

Discuss the selfless sacrifices of mothers across generations. Have children write a small note of gratitude to mothers and grandmothers.
