Significance

Shardiya Navratri -- the autumn Navratri -- begins on Ashwin Shukla Pratipada and is the most celebrated of the four annual Navratris. For nine nights, Goddess Durga is worshipped in her nine forms (Navadurga): Shailaputri, Brahmacharini, Chandraghanta, Kushmanda, Skandamata, Katyayani, Kalaratri, Mahagauri, and Siddhidatri. These nine forms represent the entire arc of the divine feminine -- from the primal mountain-born power to the supreme bestower of liberation. The festival culminates in Dussehra, the victory of Rama over Ravana and Durga over Mahishasura.

Preparation

Rituals & Vidhi

Kalash Sthapana

On Pratipada morning, establish the Kalash: fill with holy water, place mango leaves around the top, put a coconut on top. Sow jau (barley) seeds in the soil at the base -- these sprout over nine days, representing new growth.

Mantra: Om Aim Hreem Kleem Chamundaye Vichche

Akhand Jyot

Light an unbroken ghee flame (Akhand Jyot) that burns continuously for all nine days. This is the living presence of the Goddess in the home.

Daily Navadurga Puja

Each day, worship the specific form of Devi for that day with her associated color, flower, and offering. Chant the Durga Saptashati (700 verses) or listen to it over the nine days.

Kanya Puja

On Ashtami or Navami, invite 9 young girls (Kanya) representing the nine forms of Devi. Wash their feet, offer them a meal, and give gifts as worship of the divine feminine.

Fasting

Many devotees observe fasting for all nine days, consuming only fruits, milk, sabudana, and singhare/kuttu atta preparations. Others fast on the first and last day only.

Family Guidance

Teach children each day which form of Devi is being worshipped and her story. Participate in Garba and Dandiya dances in the evening. Have children help decorate the altar with fresh flowers each day.
