Significance
Pitru Paksha is the sacred 16-lunar day period in the Hindu calendar (Ashwin Krishna Paksha) when Hindus honor and pay homage to their departed ancestors (Pitrus). Ancient scriptures like the Garuda Purana, Markandeya Purana, and Vishnu Purana teach that during this fortnight, ancestral souls are granted permission to visit the earthly plane. Offerings of water (Tarpan), black sesame seeds (Tilanjali), rice cakes (Pinda Daan), and food to cows, crows, dogs, and the needy bring deep peace to departed souls and liberate three generations of lineage karma (Pitru Rina).
Preparation
Rituals & Vidhi
Purification & Sankalpa (Early Morning)
Wake up early, take a purifying bath, and wear clean, traditional white or light-colored attire. Sit facing the South direction (the realm of Yama and ancestral deities). Take water and black sesame seeds in your right hand to make the sacred resolution (Sankalpa).
Mantra: Om Devatabhyah Pitribhyashcha Mahayogibhya Eva Cha. Namah Swadhayai Swahayai Nityameva Namo Namah.
Wearing Kusha Pavitri
Wear a ring made of sacred Kusha (Darbha) grass on the ring finger of the right hand. Kusha grass acts as a spiritual insulator and cosmic purifier during ancestral rites.
Deva & Rishi Tarpan
Before offering water to ancestors, offer water with barley/akshat facing East through the fingertips (Deva Tirtha) to Brahma, Vishnu, and Shiva, then facing North (Rishi Tirtha) to the Sapta Rishis.
Pitru Tarpan (Tilanjali)
Face South. Mix clean water with Gangajal and black sesame seeds (Kala Til). Pour water three times for each ancestor through the space between the right thumb and forefinger (Pitru Tirtha) into a copper plate or directly onto the sacred earth.
Mantra: Om Vishnave Namah. Trupto Bhava, Trupto Bhava, Trupto Bhava.
Panchabali (Five Sacred Food Offerings)
Before the family eats, place 5 portions of food on banana or leaf plates: 1) Go-bali (for Cow), 2) Shwan-bali (for Dog), 3) Kaka-bali (for Crow - messenger of Pitrus), 4) Kitadi-bali (for Ants/Insects), and 5) Deva-bali (for Devas and spiritual seekers).
Anna Daan & Feeding the Needy
Offer a generous meal to Brahmins, spiritual sadhakas, or the poor and hungry. Giving food and clothes during Pitru Paksha is considered one of the highest spiritual virtues.
Evening Pitru Deepam (South-Facing Diya)
At dusk, light an earthen lamp filled with mustard oil or sesame oil and place it at the main entrance, courtyard, or balcony facing South. This lamp lights the ethereal path for ancestral souls.
Fasting
Maintain a strict sattvic and serene lifestyle throughout Pitru Paksha. Abstain strictly from meat, fish, alcohol, onions, garlic, and lavish celebrations. Shaving, haircuts, and purchasing luxury goods or new vehicles are traditionally postponed. Eat only after completing morning Tarpan and feeding animals/birds.
Family Guidance
Gather children and narrate stories of departed grandparents, great-grandparents, and family ancestors. Teach them that our life, body, and heritage are gifts from those who walked before us (Pitru Rina). Involve the whole family in feeding birds, stray dogs, and cows daily.
