Significance

Vaikunta Ekadashi, falling in the Margashirsha or Dhanur masa, is the most auspicious of all 24 Ekadashis in the year. On this day, Lord Vishnu opens the Vaikunta Dwara -- the celestial gateway to His eternal abode -- and devotees who fast and stay awake in His name are believed to attain moksha. It is said that whoever passes through the Vaikunta Dwara replica in Vishnu temples on this day is freed from the cycle of rebirth.

Preparation

Rituals & Vidhi

Dashami Sankalpa

On the evening of Dashami (day before), resolve to observe the fast. Eat a sattvic meal before sunset and mentally prepare for the vigil.

Morning Abhishekam

At dawn on Ekadashi, bathe and perform Panchamrit abhishekam to Vishnu. Offer Tulsi leaves, which are most dear to Him on this day.

Mantra: Om Namo Bhagavate Vasudevaya

Vishnu Sahasranama

Recite the Vishnu Sahasranama (1000 names of Vishnu) or listen to it. This is especially potent on Vaikunta Ekadashi.

Night Jaagran

Stay awake through the night chanting Vishnu names, reading the Bhagavata Purana, or singing Vishnu bhajans. The vigil mirrors the devotion of the liberated souls.

Dwadashi Parana

Break the fast on Dwadashi (next morning) within the prescribed time window after sunrise, ideally with Tulsi water and fruits before a full meal.

Fasting

Observe a strict fast -- no grains, lentils, or non-vegetarian food. Fruits, milk, dry fruits, and sendha namak (rock salt) preparations are permitted. Nirjala (waterless) fast is practiced by the most devoted.

Family Guidance

Take children to the local Vishnu or Venkateswara temple early morning to pass through the Vaikunta Dwara. Narrate the significance of Prahlada and the story of King Ambarisha to illustrate unwavering devotion.
