Chapter 17, Verse 3 · You Are What You Believe
सत्त्वानुरूपा सर्वस्य श्रद्धा भवति भारत ।श्रद्धामयोऽयं पुरुषो यो यच्छ्रद्धः स एव सः ॥
Sattvānurūpā sarvasya śraddhā bhavati BhārataŚraddhāmayo'yaṃ puruṣo yo yac-chraddhaḥ sa eva saḥ
The faith of each person is in accordance with his nature, O Arjuna. A person is made of his faith — as his faith is, so is he.
Chapter 17, Verse 5 · Wrong Austerity
अशास्त्रविहितं घोरं तप्यन्ते ये तपो जनाः ।दम्भाहंकारसंयुक्ताः कामरागबलान्विताः ॥
Aśāstra-vihitaṃ ghoraṃ tapyante ye tapo janāḥDambhāhaṃkāra-saṃyuktāḥ kāma-rāga-balānvitāḥ
Those who perform severe austerities and penances not recommended in the scriptures, performing them out of pride and egoism — these unintelligent people do so.
Chapter 17, Verse 15 · Austerity of Speech
अनुद्वेगकरं वाक्यं सत्यं प्रियहितं च यत् ।स्वाध्यायाभ्यसनं चैव वाङ्मयं तप उच्यते ॥
Anudvega-karaṃ vākyaṃ satyaṃ priya-hitaṃ ca yatSvādhyāyābhyasanaṃ caiva vāṅ-mayaṃ tapa ucyate
Austerity of speech consists of speaking words that are truthful, pleasing, beneficial and not agitating to others, and also regular practice of Vedic study.
Chapter 17, Verse 20 · Sattvic Charity
दातव्यमिति यद्दानं दीयतेऽनुपकारिणे ।देशे काले च पात्रे च तद्दानं सात्त्विकं स्मृतम् ॥
Dātavyam iti yad dānaṃ dīyate'nupakāriṇeDeśe kāle ca pātre ca tad dānaṃ sāttvikaṃ smṛtam
Charity given out of duty, without expectation of return, at the proper time and place, and to a worthy person — that charity is considered to be in sattva.
Chapter 17, Verse 27 · Sat — The Real
यज्ञे तपसि दाने च स्थितिः सदिति चोच्यते ।कर्म चैव तदर्थीयं सदित्येवाभिधीयते ॥
Yajñe tapasi dāne ca sthitiḥ sad iti cocyateKarma caiva tad-arthīyaṃ sad ity evābhidhīyate
Steadiness in sacrifice, austerity and charity is called "sat" (the real). And any action performed for the sake of the Supreme is also called "sat".
