Chapter 18, Verse 45 · Excellence Through Duty
स्वे स्वे कर्मण्यभिरतः संसिद्धिं लभते नरः ।स्वकर्मनिरतः सिद्धिं यथा विन्दति तच्छृणु ॥
Sve sve karmaṇy abhirataḥ saṃsiddhiṃ labhate naraḥSva-karma-nirataḥ siddhiṃ yathā vindati tac chṛṇu
By dedicating oneself to one's own work, a person can attain the highest perfection. Hear from Me how a person attains perfection by doing his own duty.
Chapter 18, Verse 47 · Svadharma
श्रेयान्स्वधर्मो विगुणः परधर्मात्स्वनुष्ठितात् ।स्वभावनियतं कर्म कुर्वन्नाप्नोति किल्बिषम् ॥
Śreyān sva-dharmo viguṇaḥ para-dharmāt sv-anuṣṭhitātSvabhāva-niyataṃ karma kurvan nāpnoti kilbiṣam
Better is one's own dharma, though imperfectly done, than the dharma of another well performed. Performing the duty ordained by one's own nature, one incurs no sin.
Chapter 18, Verse 55 · Knowing God Through Devotion
भक्त्या मामभिजानाति यावान्यश्चास्मि तत्त्वतः ।ततो मां तत्त्वतो ज्ञात्वा विशते तदनन्तरम् ॥
Bhaktyā mām abhijānāti yāvān yaś cāsmi tattvataḥTato māṃ tattvato jñātvā viśate tad anantaram
Through devotion one truly knows Me, what and who I am in truth. Then, having known Me in truth, he at once enters into Me.
Chapter 18, Verse 61 · God in Every Heart
ईश्वरः सर्वभूतानां हृद्देशेऽर्जुन तिष्ठति ।भ्रामयन्सर्वभूतानि यन्त्रारूढानि मायया ॥
Īśvaraḥ sarva-bhūtānāṃ hṛd-deśe'rjuna tiṣṭhatiBhrāmayan sarva-bhūtāni yantrārūḍhāni māyayā
The Lord dwells in the heart of all beings, O Arjuna, causing all beings to revolve by His power as if mounted on a machine.
Chapter 18, Verse 63 · Free Will
इति ते ज्ञानमाख्यातं गुह्याद्गुह्यतरं मया ।विमृश्यैतदशेषेण यथेच्छसि तथा कुरु ॥
Iti te jñānam ākhyātaṃ guhyād guhyataraṃ mayāVimṛśyaitad aśeṣeṇa yathecchasi tathā kuru
Thus I have explained to you the most confidential of all knowledge. Deliberate on this fully, and then do what you wish.
Chapter 18, Verse 65 · God's Personal Promise
मन्मना भव मद्भक्तो मद्याजी मां नमस्कुरु ।मामेवैष्यसि सत्यं ते प्रतिजाने प्रियोऽसि मे ॥
Man-manā bhava mad-bhakto mad-yājī māṃ namaskuruMām evaiṣyasi satyaṃ te pratijāne priyo'si me
Fix your mind on Me, be devoted to Me, worship Me, bow down to Me. You will come to Me — I promise you truly, for you are dear to Me.
Chapter 18, Verse 66 · Total Surrender — The Final Teaching
सर्वधर्मान्परित्यज्य मामेकं शरणं व्रज ।अहं त्वां सर्वपापेभ्यो मोक्षयिष्यामि मा शुचः ॥
Sarva-dharmān parityajya mām ekaṃ śaraṇaṃ vrajaAhaṃ tvāṃ sarva-pāpebhyo mokṣayiṣyāmi mā śucaḥ
Abandon all varieties of dharma and simply surrender to Me. I shall deliver you from all sinful reactions. Do not fear.
Chapter 18, Verse 78 · Victory with God
यत्र योगेश्वरः कृष्णो यत्र पार्थो धनुर्धरः ।तत्र श्रीर्विजयो भूतिर्ध्रुवा नीतिर्मतिर्मम ॥
Yatra yogeśvaraḥ Kṛṣṇo yatra Pārtho dhanur-dharaḥTatra śrīr vijayo bhūtir dhruvā nītir matir mama
Wherever there is Krishna, the master of all mystics, and wherever there is Arjuna, the supreme archer — there will certainly be opulence, victory, extraordinary power and morality. That is my conviction.
Chapter 18, Verse 2 · Renunciation Defined
श्रीभगवानुवाच ।काम्यानां कर्मणां न्यासं संन्यासं कवयो विदुः ।सर्वकर्मफलत्यागं प्राहुस्त्यागं विचक्षणाः ॥
Śrī Bhagavān uvācaKāmyānāṃ karmaṇāṃ nyāsaṃ sannyāsaṃ kavayo viduḥSarva-karma-phala-tyāgaṃ prāhus tyāgaṃ vicakṣaṇāḥ
The Supreme Lord said: The sages understand renunciation as giving up all activities motivated by desire. And the wise call the giving up of all fruits of action "tyaga" (relinquishment).
Chapter 18, Verse 13 · The Five Causes of Action
पञ्चैतानि महाबाहो कारणानि निबोध मे ।साङ्ख्ये कृतान्ते प्रोक्तानि सिद्धये सर्वकर्मणाम् ॥
Pañcaitāni mahābāho kāraṇāni nibodha meSāṅkhye kṛtānte proktāni siddhaye sarva-karmaṇām
O mighty-armed Arjuna, learn from Me the five causes for the accomplishment of all action as declared in Sankhya philosophy.
Chapter 18, Verse 20 · Sattvic Knowledge — Seeing Unity
सर्वभूतेषु येनैकं भावमव्ययमीक्षते ।अविभक्तं विभक्तेषु तज्ज्ञानं विद्धि सात्त्विकम् ॥
Sarva-bhūteṣu yenaikaṃ bhāvam avyayam īkṣateAvibhaktaṃ vibhakteṣu taj jñānaṃ viddhi sāttvikam
That knowledge by which one sees the one undivided imperishable reality in all diverse beings — know that knowledge to be sattvic.
Chapter 18, Verse 41 · Natural Qualities Define Duty
ब्राह्मणक्षत्रियविशां शूद्राणां च परन्तप ।कर्माणि प्रविभक्तानि स्वभावप्रभवैर्गुणैः ॥
Brāhmaṇa-kṣatriya-viśāṃ śūdrāṇāṃ ca parantapaKarmāṇi pravibhaktāni svabhāva-prabhavair guṇaiḥ
Brahmanas, kshatriyas, vaishyas and shudras are distinguished by their qualities born of their own nature, O conqueror of enemies.
Chapter 18, Verse 46 · Worship Through Your Own Work
यतः प्रवृत्तिर्भूतानां येन सर्वमिदं ततम् ।स्वकर्मणा तमभ्यर्च्य सिद्धिं विन्दति मानवः ॥
Yataḥ pravṛttir bhūtānāṃ yena sarvam idaṃ tatamSva-karmaṇā tam abhyarcya siddhiṃ vindati mānaваḥ
By worshipping the Lord, who is the source of all beings and who pervades all this creation, through the performance of one's own duty — a person can attain perfection.
Chapter 18, Verse 58 · Grace Overcomes All Obstacles
मच्चित्तः सर्वदुर्गाणि मत्प्रसादात्तरिष्यसि ।अथ चेत्त्वमहंकारान्न श्रोष्यसि विनङ्क्ष्यसि ॥
Mac-cittaḥ sarva-durgāṇi mat-prasādāt tariṣyasiAtha cet tvam ahaṃkārān na śroṣyasi vinaṅkṣyasi
If you become conscious of Me, you shall pass over all the obstacles of conditioned life by My grace. If, however, you do not hear Me out of ego, you will be lost.
Chapter 18, Verse 64 · The Most Secret Teaching — To a Dear Friend
सर्वगुह्यतमं भूयः शृणु मे परमं वचः ।इष्टोऽसि मे दृढमिति ततो वक्ष्यामि ते हितम् ॥
Sarva-guhyatamaṃ bhūyaḥ śṛṇu me paramaṃ vacaḥIṣṭo'si me dṛḍham iti tato vakṣyāmi te hitam
Because you are My very dear friend, I am speaking to you My supreme instruction, the most confidential knowledge of all. Hear this from Me, for it is for your benefit.
Chapter 18, Verse 68 · Sharing This Knowledge is the Highest Service
य इमं परमं गुह्यं मद्भक्तेष्वभिधास्यति ।भक्तिं मयि परां कृत्वा मामेवैष्यत्यसंशयः ॥
Ya imaṃ paramaṃ guhyaṃ mad-bhakteṣv abhidhāsyatiBhaktiṃ mayi parāṃ kṛtvā mām evaiṣyaty asaṃśayaḥ
For one who explains this supreme secret to the devotees, devotional service is guaranteed and at the end he will come back to Me — without doubt.
Chapter 18, Verse 70 · Reading the Gita is Worship
अध्येष्यते च य इमं धर्म्यं संवादमावयोः ।ज्ञानयज्ञेन तेनाहमिष्टः स्यामिति मे मतिः ॥
Adhyeṣyate ca ya imaṃ dharmyaṃ saṃvādam āvayoḥJñāna-yajñena tenāham iṣṭaḥ syām iti me matiḥ
And I declare that one who studies this sacred conversation of ours worships Me by his intelligence — that is My opinion.
Chapter 18, Verse 73 · Arjuna's Awakening — The Gita Closes
अर्जुन उवाच ।नष्टो मोहः स्मृतिर्लब्धा त्वत्प्रसादान्मयाच्युत ।स्थितोऽस्मि गतसन्देहः करिष्ये वचनं तव ॥
Arjuna uvācaNaṣṭo mohaḥ smṛtir labdhā tvat-prasādān mayācyutaSthito'smi gata-sandehaḥ kariṣye vacanaṃ tava
Arjuna said: My dear Krishna, O infallible one, my illusion is now gone. I have regained my memory by Your grace. I am now firm and free from doubt — I will act according to Your word.
